Abstract

Title:Numerical and experimental analysis of the Tesla fan's performance
Abstract:
Nikola Tesla patented a fan, that works on the principle of friction. In the diploma, performance of a Tesla fan and a theoretical background of it’s performance, with an intention to reduce noise, is presented. In the research a numerical model, based on the turbulent model k-, was made with the program Ansys. Numerical simulations prove, that the afinity laws, wich hold for all bladed turbomachinery, hold also for the bladeless Tesla fan. Based on the simulation results, the geometric properties of a Tesla fan with highest efficiency, are derived. The fan was also manufactured and measurements were performed. The measurements validate the results from numerical simulations and confirm the hypothesis that the validity of afinity laws can be expanded to bladeless turbomachinery.
