The author deals with the origins of medieval Ptuj, primarily on the basis of published archaeological, historical and art-historical sources, which he compares and tries to integrate into a whole. First, he briefly considers the geographical conditions and then discusses the questions of the continuity of settlement between the Antiquity and High Middle Ages. He presents the early medieval settlement and necropolises in Ptuj and the immediate vicinity. Special attention is given to the problem of the so-called Slavic sanctuary. The boundary with Hungary is discussed in respect to its impact on Ptuj. Then he continues with the major constructions of the 12th and 13th centuries, namely the castle, the Collegiate Church of St. George, the Church of St. Oswald, the Dominican and Minorite monasteries, the town walls etc. He reaches the conclusion that many archaeological excavations should be revaluated, while most archaeological sites of later periods have not been properly evaluated at all.
