Introduction: Diabetes is becoming more and more common. The majority of people in the world suffer from type 2 diabetes, however, other types are on the increase as well. In addition, there are many cases of gestational diabetes caused by various factors. During pregnancy women get more sensitive, therefore the consequences of diabetes can be severe and influence the physical, psychological, social and other parts of their life. Purpose: The aim of this diploma is to research and introduce the problems pregnant women cope with when diagnosed with gestational diabetes and its influence on the quality of their lives. Another important issue is the role of a nurse managing the risks and complications during pregnancy and helping pregnant women face the consequences of the disease. Methods:: A descriptive method was used to give an overview of domestic and foreign scientific and professional literature during the period from 2006 to 2017. The following databases were in research: COCHRANE, MEDLINE, ScienceDirect and CINAHL. Discussion and conclusion: Due to a compulsory testing, gestational diabetes in Slovenia is diagnosed in time. When faced with the diagnosis, the majority of pregnant women are insecure, anxious, worried about their and baby’s health, express their fear and frustration with the treatment and the need to change their lifestyle. Despite the disease, the chances of giving birth to a healthy child and not experiencing any consequences are high. Treatment compliance, the change of a lifestyle and the support gained by the partner and the society are the main factors that help pregnant women manage the disease properly. A trained nurse who can recognize individual problems and needs during pregnancy can ensure the necessary information and support for a pregnant woman to lead a new healthy lifestyle.
