Otrok treh staršev: napredek ali stranpot biomedicine : diplomsko delo

Mitohondrijske bolezni so redka oblika dednih bolezni, ki se na otroka prenašajo preko materinih prizadetih mitohondrijev. Bolezni so usodne in zanje še ne poznamo zdravila. Otrok zaradi bolezni s časoma izgublja na teži, lahko izgubi vid in sluh ter motorične in umske sposobnosti. Znanstveniki so odkrili postopek mitohondrijske terapije za preprečevanje dedovanja mitohondrijskih bolezni in zdravljenja neplodnosti, ki se opravi s pomočjo treh staršev; matere, očeta in darovalke jajčeca. Rojen otrok ima posledično genski zapis treh staršev. Mitohondrijska terapija vsebuje etične dileme, kot je na primer uničenje zarodka, poleg tega pa ne vemo kakšen dolgoročni vpliv ima terapija na otroke, rojene na takšen način. Znanstvenih razprav je zaenkrat še malo, razprave na etičnem področju pa so od vsega začetka zelo burne.

Abstract

Mitochondrial diseases are a rare form of inheritable disease, which are transferred to child via mother's faulty mitochondria. Diseases are fatal and we still do not know the cure. Because of the illness, child loses weight; he can lose sight and hearing, motoric and mental abilities. Scientists have discovered a mitochondrial therapy procedure to prevent the inheritance of mitochondrial diseases and the treatment of infertility. This procedure is done with the help of three parents: mother, father and the egg donor. As a result, the child has a genetic code of three parents. Mitochondrial therapy contains ethical dilemmas, such as destructions of the embryo. In addition, we do not know what impact therapy will have on 'her' children. For now, there are not many scientific discussions, although the ethical debate has been very heated since the method emerged.
