The diploma thesis entitled Implementation of Photography with Elements of Illustration discusses the areas of illustration and photography, their main characteristics, and how they complement and differ from each other. The main topic of the thesis is the connection between photography and illustration. Due to certain common features, we can conclude that, in some aspects, illustration is in fact the predecessor of photography. In many ways, especially as a document of time, photography has largely replaced illustration. Nevertheless, illustration has maintained some unique advantages, such as the subjective artistic expression of the author.
The theoretical part of the diploma thesis gives a summarized history and describes the development of illustration as well as the characteristics of illustration. In addition, it also present illustraton in children's books and picture books.
The thesis briefly discusses the history of the creation and development of photographic techniques and the main features of photography. To continue, it also presents the use of photography in books for children and adults.
The practical part of the thesis consists of two parts: the first one includes the analysis of children's picture books by Slovenian and foreign authors, who articulated the stories using different combinations of photography and illustration. The second part consists of pictures designed as artistic interpretation of the folk tale about Goldenhorn. The artwork contains elements of photography and illustration, combining traditional and digital techniques. The interlacing of of a real environment and imaginative characters is achieved through the use of photographs depicting a realistic environment of the Julian Alps and illustrations of the main characters in the legend of the Goldenhorn, embedded within as an imaginary element. The process of producing the series of images is described in detail: the way photos are processed, the procedure of digitalizing the illustrations and the process of combining all these elements into an artistic integrity.
