The purpose of diploma work is to create a collection for man and women inspired by shoemaking. It covers the exploration and revival of local heritage techniques in connection with leather production and shoemaking. The ultimate purpose was to design and create a modern collection of clothing and accessories for women and men.
The inspiration for the collection came from the artefacts displayed in the Slovene Ethnographic Museum in Ljubljana and from my home town Nazarje, where previously people made living by engaging in various crafts, e.g. rafting, beekeeping, pottery, blacksmithing, carpentry. Among the crafts the most flourishing was leather processing and shoe making which was an additional reason for reviving this area. I visited Franc Grudnik, an 85-year-old shoe maker who is still engaged in this business and faithful to the tradition.
The collection of women’s and men’s garments consists of ten silhouettes (five women’s and five men’s). They are characterised by different material textures, colours, contrasts, and the use of manual techniques. They are comfortable, functional and pleasant to wear. The collections was presented at the Ljubljana Fashion Week in April 2017. Later, the complete collection was also photographed.
The research resulted in a wearable collection for men and women, stemming from old handcrafts which have unfortunately become obsolete.
