Nowadays there is a greater need for the development of websites which can be created not only by specialized companies but also by individuals. This master’s thesis provides answers on how to start website development, what prior knowledge is needed and what are the advantages and limitations of various approaches by comparing two different website creation processes.
In the thesis, processes for responsive website creation are analyzed using web technologies and content management systems (CMS). The theoretical part includes a study of individual steps in development, a description of five stages of user experience and strategies for responsive design development along with their advantages as well as an overview of existing CMS and the following web technologies: HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript. This part is the starting point for the practical development of two websites for Margareta Schwarzwald Institute for Visual Culture and Artistic and Cultural Production, created with the help of web technologies and Wordpress CMS which has proven to be the best solution.
The results confirm that CMS made the website development quicker, easier and simpler to manage from the client's perspective, but it includes several restrictions on individual element manipulation. When creating a website with web technologies, there are fewer restrictions, however, more prior knowledge for development is required. The survey in which both websites were compared showed that the website developed by web technologies performs better – it offers faster loading, better user experience, more accurate content and better design. Despite these results, the final website was created with Wordpress due to its easier management and simplicity of adding new elements or functionalities by our client.
