The aim of this thesis is to present a ratio for preoperative exercise program using anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) as an example, as preoperative exercise is an important factor for the postoperative recovery and clinical outcome. The thesis describes the anatomical structure and the biomechanics of the knee joint, and explains the way in which the ACL, one of the key structures of the knee joint, allows us to regain strength and fitness. The ACL injury is presented as well.
With the help of selected and carefully examined Slovene and foreign literature, guidelines for the preoperative physical therapy have been developed. Exercises that an individual can perform for a month prior to the surgery have been suggested and described. In the selection process, the emphasis has been put on the exercises that strengthen the key muscle groups influencing the time of recovery. They have been ranked according to difficulty and broken down into three sets: strength exercises, proprioception exercises and flexibility exercises. The most common mistakes have been mentioned as well.
The thesis strives to develop an increased awareness of pre-operative physical exercises. Prehab is, in fact, an exercise program that significantly influences the success of the whole rehabilitation process. It can improve quality of our life after surgery and enable us to further engage in sports activities.
