Abstract

Title:Freestyle snowboarding: way of life or a competitive sport
Abstract:
The diploma thesis focuses on freestyle snowboarding from the view point of professional snowboarders. It researches how these snowboarders view their sport and their place in it. With initial focus on already existing researches and literature we introduces snowboarding thorough the aspect of extreme sports, snowboarding subculture, commercialization, influence of the media, institutionalization, competitions and professionalism. As our main goals we tried to discover how the athletes see their sport, which is the relation between athletes and competitions as well as the competition system, how the athletes view the changes in snowboarding and where is it going as a competition oriented sport. To gain this information we used semi-structured interview. The questions were orientated towards snowboarding as a competitive sport, way of life and professionalism in snowboarding. We use qualitative method of analyzing the content to get results. The main idea we came across was how divided the world of snowboarding is. The sport itself and people in it try to find balance between the sport becoming more like a traditional competitive sport and the way of life. Athletes themselves agree that snowboarding is their way of life but some wouldn't go as far as to say it completely defines them. As it also shows in the research the competitions are not the most important aspects of snowboarding for some athletes. It all depends on the athlete and the way he chooses to go about his sport and his professional career. As far as the popularity of sport goes the athletes find it hard to define if the sport is growing or not. Snowboarding is currently one of the more attractive sport that is part of the Olympic Games but it does not come from the Olympic background; so far it still floats between traditional competitive sports and lifestyle sports which are defined by freedom, fun, individuality and internal motivation.
