Abstract

Title:
Automatic traffic routing on a model train layout
Abstract:
The purpose of this masters thesis is to connect the theoretical and practical knowledge obtained during the study of telecommunications. The result needs to be a functional product. That is why a simple network represented on a model railway layout was taken as the basis. The layout needed to be fully digitized and automated. The network of the railway layout was modelled as a network graph, where the connections (vertices) only have two states: free or occupied. A system that could calculate the best route given a desired timetable was implemented above the network graph. That system also automatically drives the trains and visualizes everything to the user in a user interface. Electronics that allows the communication between the computer and the model railway layout was developed in addition to that. Some existing open-source electronics was remade.
