Abstract

Title:99 names of God in Islam
Abstract:
Among other things, the Islamic tradition also knows 99 names for God, which hold the status of the most beautiful names. In this diploma thesis we seek to explore this wide phenomenon, where the concept of God is put in a nutshell. In the first part we address a wider subject of God in the Islamic thought, which is made through a brief outline of four most important views, i.e. the views of Muttasils, Hanbalites, Asharaites and al-Ghazali. The central part of the thesis is focused on the interpretation of the meaning of names, relying on the al-Ghazali's interpretation, as its impact can be seen in all other sources. In the final, third part of the thesis, we attempt to place the concept of God in 99 names into a broader religious-mental context. To achieve this, we use the notion of paradox and the relationship between in and out, transcendence and immanence.

Keywords:Islam, Islamic theology, God, 99 names of God, paradox, transcendence, immanence
