Abstract

Title:
Analysis of speech and language screening of five-year-olds in the prekmurje region
Abstract:
The purpose of survey was to analyze preventive speech and language examination of five-year-olds who were born between 2008 nad 2010 in Prekmurje region. Analysis included five-year-olds who attended preventive examination and five-year-olds who were diagnosed with speech and language disorders. Furthermore, speech and language disorders among these children were also analyzed. Copyrighted checklist was used to analyze documents of child's speech and language development. Analysis included data about gender and need for speech and language therapy. We also gathered data on type of speech and language disorders, inclusion of children in speech and language therapy and its outcome. Dataset was statistically processed and edited in accordance with year of birth (2008, 2009 and 2010) and altogether. The results of survey have shown great response to the invitation for preventive speech and language examination. Urgent need for speech and language therapy was discovered among one quarter of five-year-olds who attended the examination. More than 80% of these children were later included in therapy which was successful in most cases. The results have shown higher need for speech and language therapy among boys than girls. This result turned out to be statistically significant. Survey also confirmed theoretical findings on frequency of articulation disorders among pre-school children.
