The aim of this thesis is to create and design a manual for a pet store and to learn about making a manual itself in more detail. This manual looks like a magazine, with one exception: it does not come out every month, but consists of only one publication. It advises animal lovers on pet food and gives various tips for their pets.
In designing such publications communication with readers plays an important role. A good guide should be designed in a way to attract customers, which is achieved by using various design guidelines. A part of a successfully designed manual is graphical elements (images and text) that make up a large portion of publications. By properly setting these elements the desired attention is attracted..
The thesis consists of two parts. The chapters of the theoretical part define the relevant design guidelines and basic concepts related to the organization of pages (net, columns and suchlike). Those are also graphical elements of the manual, text and images, which have a major effect in designing. The theoretical part presents typography in more detail. In the practical part the thesis shows the entire manufacturing process – from the conceptual design, initial manual design, manufacturing publications in Adobe InDesign, selected layout, photographs, typography and color, to the finished printed product. The practical part includes explanations of the decisions that were made in the process of designing the manual. Three successfully achieved objectives were set out as well. The last part of the thesis consists mostly of observations.
