Abstract

Title:Retention appliances
Abstract:
Introduction: In order to keep teeth and dental arch on a new, with orthodontic treatment created position, we must apply retention appliances. These appliances must be used throughout the full morphological and functional transformation of the dental system, facial skeleton, chewing muscles and mimic structure (Vidović, 1982). Aim: The aim of the diploma work was the presentation of current retention appliances, a description of the manufacturing process and the calculation of prices and labor time needed to make some of the selected retention devices that were designed for the study. The aim of the diploma work is also to verify the number and nature of planned retention appliances for patients who completed orthodontic treatment in the Health Center Orthos in Ljubljana in the year 2013. Methods: The methods that we used in the diploma work were the review of both domestic and foreign professional literature of articles and books of the jaw and dental orthopedics, implementation of practical work in the dental laboratory and statistical overview of planned retention devices in the Health Center Orthos for 2013. Results: This diploma work presents the production of wire retainer, buccal wire retainer, retention plate, space maintainer, retention plate by Zagreb and Fränkel type III. Following the instructions of the Health Insurance Institute of Slovenia we calculated the time and cost of producing selected retention appliances. The statistics of planned retention appliances in the Health Center Orthos included 123 patients who had completed orthodontic treatment in 2013, counting 65 girls and 58 boys. It was found that after the termination of the orthodontic treatment retention was applied to all patients. Discussion and conclusion: The results showed that the most common retention after removing the orthodontic appliance is the upper retention plate in combination with the upper and lower wire retainer. Wire retainer had the shortest manufacturing time, while the Fränkel type III had the longest.
