The research purpose of this thesis is analysing the attendance of hockey matches in Slovenia. I wanted to research why the number of spectators is significantly lower than in the past. The aim is also to examine the legal basis of organization of sporting events and to analyse and describe the procedure of organizing a successful sporting event.
The research is empirical. I used the method of analysis of primary and secondary sources’ content, the method of analysis of Internet sources’ content and the descriptive method, which was used to clarify concepts and interpretations in the field of sporting event’s organization.
Through the analysis and the results, I have discovered that the attendance number of hockey matches is lowering. The attendance of hockey matches gradually decreased. The results of the analysis showed that the highest number of spectators was in season 2007/2008. At that time, there were approximately 194 thousand spectators who visited hockey matches. The attendance of hockey matches has plummeted in the last three years. The worst season was 2013/2014 when there were a little more than 50 thousand spectators. I have discovered that the reasons for low attendance was mostly the series of defeat of Slovenian teams, poor financial situation of Slovene clubs, economic crisis and also the legislation.
The thesis is useful for those who are responsible for organizing sporting events. It will help them be well informed with the proper way of organizing the events, so they will be able to attract as many spectators as possible.
The findings of the thesis show that it is necessary to organize projects with great value and promote them in order to attract new spectators and future sponsors. Sporting events are an essential part of every culture. It is a way of spending time together, relaxation, with the excellent results of athletes being a reflection of a well-developed and organized society.
