The purpose of this work was to review the existing literature, mainly scientific papers, which examine the importance of strength and strength workout in ice hockey.
The goal was to create a strength workout programme proposal for ice hockey players, based on the existing literature, with an emphasis on the preparatory phase.
The workout programme has been designed based on Ljubljana HDD Olimpija hockey team’s annual plan.
In the beginning of this thesis, a brief history, rules and main characteristics of ice hockey are presented, with which we have specified the main muscle groups, that are the most stressed during the game. We have presented the model, biochemical and histochemical characteristics of ice hockey, with which we have identified the energy systems and stress phases that prevail in ice hockey. Furthermore, we have presented strength as a motor ability, strength division and types of methods, with which we develop specific types of strength.
In the main part of the thesis, we have presented an annual plan of Ljubljana’s HDD Olimpija hockey team. We had divided the plan into a preparatory, competitive and transitional phase and designed a workout programme for the whole season with specific goals in terms of strength workout. In the programme we have specified when, for how long and with which methods and exercises the specific types of strength are developed. We focused primarily on the preparatory phase, which represents the basis for the competitive part of the season. In the end, we have identified the main physical fitness tests used for verification and monitoring of strength workout programme in ice hockey.
