In the theoretical part of this undergraduate thesis, titled 19th-century English novel illustration, the definition of illustration is provided, as well as the history of European and Slovenian book illustration together with some of the more prominent illustrators who made a contribution to the field. Subsequently, 19th-century literature is presented with an emphasis on the more prominent figures of English literature and on book illustrators.
The experimental part of the thesis contains a collection of copyrighted illustrations based on the novel Pride and prejudice by Jane Austen. I decided to illustrate this particular novel out of a special interest in the 19-th century literature and illustration. In the continuation of the experimental part, chosen painting and drawing techniques are presented, followed by a discussion on combining different techniques and strengths and weaknesses which stem from that. A calligraphy technique is also presented, since calligraphy is included into designed book illustrations. The final illustrations are printed onto the covers and inserted into a self-produced notebook, designed for writing as well as drawing. Besides the illustrations, the notebook, in a contemporary manner, aslo includes different decorative elements.
