In this master’s degree I focused on connection between visual and musical art in the areas of rhythm, harmony, composition and surround key bright-dark. In theoretical part I researched each area from perspective of visual and musical language and from the perspective of connection between them. In the empirical part, I have first conducted a web survey among teachers of visual arts in Slovenian primary schools, where the focus was on finding their opinion whether visual and musical language are related, if music is a suitable aid for easier understanding of visual art terms and concepts and in which cases do they use musical theory and musical examples to aid teaching of visual art terms and concepts. Later I conducted an action research in specific, innovative way among students of 5, 7 and 8 grade, teaching about areas I researched in this master’s degree, using musical theory and concrete musical examples. Although rhythm, harmony, composition and surround key bright-dark are present in teaching plan, they are not being taught with aid of music and musical examples. Therefore I have been evaluating the impact of this kind of teaching on student’s understanding. Comparison of results of students’ knowledge before and after the lessons showed better understanding of visual concepts, which encourages me to further research the connection between visual and musical art, and to prepare practical teaching tools, where I can efficiently use the knowledge which I collected from the research.
