Manufacturers face different challenges when launching certain products on the market due to different safety requirements of the international community and additional requirements of individual countries. In addition to the international standardisation, the manufacturers also often face additional requirements of specific national certification bodies.
Products with very complex requirements are, for example, power supplies (either for installation or for a direct connection). Because of this I chose this product as the basis for my dissertation. I independently carried out the testing of the switch mode power supply in accordance with the requirements of European and international standards. At the same time, I also took into account specifics for the entry into the North American market.
I described the whole project on the basis of a practical example, from determining the right standard, determining possible points of the standards, the integration of additional international requests to the preparation of the final project documentation. I also included the explanation of actual technical requirements of the standards. I have also appropriately displayed personal measuring results of the procedures I performed.
In the dissertation I explained the specifics of testing and the certification of products, I roughly described the requirements of the international standard IEC 60950-1 that was in this case used. I also introduced the international certification scheme CB. I took into account the requirements of UL 60950-1 and CAN/CSA-C22.2 No. 60950-1, both of which are harmonised with IEC 60950-1. The issuing of the certificates in accordance with the requirements of the CB scheme has, in the selected example, allowed the manufacturer the continuation and entry into the North American market through the implementation of the additional UL and CSA certification. The measured results and the prepared report from my side served as a basis for all further procedures.
In addition to the described methods, procedures and the acquired knowledge from the technical test-performance, I also focused on the problems of international standardisation which many manufacturers increasingly face.
