Within the operating field of the social pedagogue, we also find the area of non-chemical addictions, which also includes the addiction to gambling. In Slovenia, this area is relatively poorly researched, and I used my diploma to make an overview of existing researches, statistics, and measures regarding this type of addiction.
In the theoretical part, I was interested in the history and development of gambling in Slovenia and in general, the statistical data for Slovenia, the legal aspects which regulate this area, and the concept of addiction. I learnt in detail about gambling and the mechanisms in its background. As I developed the gambling employee profile and got familiar with their characteristics throughout the theoretical part of my paper, I put special attention to the croupiers. I also reviewed the conditions in providing help to gambling addicts in Slovenia and Europe.
In the empirical part, on the basis of three interviews with male croupiers, I researched the signs of problematic gambling of croupiers and the main reasons that problematic gambling manifests itself according to the casino employees. I also tried to establish the consequences of gambling and the needs for help among croupiers.
I conclude my diploma thesis with the following conclusions: gambling addiction among casino employees in the Primorska Region is limited to individual cases. The employees hold the opinion that working in a casino does represent a risk to develop an addiction because the employees are in constant contact with gambling, which may lead to problematic gambling. The consequences of problematic gambling also result in a worsened financial situation of the individual and their families, which can also lead to criminal acts, such as theft, and family problems, general bad condition, and decreased work efficiency. Throughout my thesis, I did not recognize a need for help among croupiers.
