The theoretical part of my thesis is divided into two sections. In the first section, I define, classify and present a historical overview of legendary creatures in Slovene folktales according to the monograph Od Ajda do zlatoroga: Slovenska bajeslovna bitja (2008) by Monika Kropej. In the second section, however, I define, classify and present a historical overview of literary characters in contemporary fairy tales according to the discussion paper Sodobna pravljica (1999-2000) written by Marjana Kobe. I mainly focus on the fairy tales whose main characters are well-known in folk fairy-tale tradition.
The second part of my thesis is divided into four sections. In the first section, I list all the legendary creatures found in Slovene folktales, and in the second section, I list the fairy-tale creatures which are presented in Slovene youth literature and are similar to the legendary creatures in Slovene folktales. In the third section, there is a comparative analysis of the best known legendary creatures in Slovene folktales and literary characters found in Slovene youth literature. In the fourth section, I present a research interview with the ethnologist Monika Kropej Telban.
The aim of my thesis is to compare legendary creatures in Slovene folktales and literary characters in Slovene youth literature and to point out their similarities and differences. I also want to find such literary characters in Slovene youth literature which are similar to legendary creatures presented in Slovene folktales.
