The purpose of this article is to show the link between the functioning of the United Nations (UN) in the field of arms limitation and earlier international activities in this field. Specifically, the article focuses on efforts undertaken throughout the UN system of principal organs and other bodies. It looks at the UN's role in the context of a wider international effort as the initiator, supporter, convenor, depositary of international conventions and treaties, and as the institution that monitors states' compliance with those international agreements.
