The article highlights the role of Slovenian journalism in the reproduction of neoliberal discourse and construction of Slovenian neoliberal reality. The authors show that such journalistic reporting establishes the hegemony of neoliberalism through the crisis of critique and through the closing of meanings. When analysing a current affairs news programme on television the authors deconstruct specific discursive strategies through which the neoliberal order is produced, and they show the real effects of such neoliberal discourse in the daily life of individuals. These TV news programmes paradoxically link and naturalise the traditional conservative ideas of nation, family, authority, tradition with neoliberal ideas such as egoistic interests, competitive individualism, the primacy of the market and opposition to the state. Neoliberal discourse disciplines individuals in the marketing and individualistic mental scheme, and thereby transforms active citizens into mere consumers and non-critical subjects. Such journalism aestheticises and commodifies social critique and turns it into a non-critique. The authors point to the ideological nature of such journalism, which is becoming a tool in the hands of neoliberal discourse, and they call for an increase of the critical role of journalism in society for any kind of democratic revolution.
