The objective of the diploma thesis is to study the development and use of hand as part of the body that is primary for communication in relation to speech. Quality communication depends on the development of speech and language, as well as on the development and use of hand. For purposes of communication, a hand can supplement verbal communication or assume the role of speech and language. With a normally developing child, the parallel role of hand in speech and language development is most important during the pre-school period. However, in the event of developmental deficiencies in either component, professional assistance for stimulating development and use is required.
The diploma thesis covers the prenatal development of speech organs and other structures necessary for further development of communication. I present the development and interaction of the following components of communication: speech and language, hand signs and gestures, brains. The emphasis is on the development up to six years of age. The following section lists and describes the methods and therapies that particularly emphasise the primary development of hand and development of hand use for the purpose of speech and language.
