Abstract

Title:Why Slovenian students prolong their studies?
Abstract:
This diploma thesis discusses delaying of studies completion among Slovenian students. Not completing one’s studies, is in this thesis understood as not graduating in prescribed period of time – from enrolment to the end of the extra year of studies. Delaying with degree completion is investigated in a wider context. Firstly issue is highlighted from the view of change in life course of today’s youth, which took place over the past decades. Topics of emerging adulthood, transition into adult roles, labour market etc., are discussed. Secondly this thesis examines socio-economic and individual (academic motivation, procrastination, academic self-image etc.) predictors for failing in completing studies in expected time. Empirical part investigates reasons why students (of old study programs), in their opinion, have not finished their studies on time. Focus groups and individual interviews were used as main tools for investigating these reasons. Based on the literature overview and needs expressed by the participants of the current research, I develop suggestions that could facilitate students transition from education to labour market and provide them with support for studies completion.
