The theoretical part of the thesis defines the family and family relations, which are divided into four main sections; the relations between the parents, the relations between children and parents, the relations between the siblings and the relations between the adopted children and surrogate parents. It describes the most common problems of modern families, which affect family relations and are commonly found in selected Slovenian youth literature works.
The second spectrum of the theoretical part presents originality in picture books and their typology by Marjana Kobe and the characteristics of the short stories in the form of picture books. It includes the biographies and bibliographies of the main literary artists of the written word, Saša Vegri and Svetlana Makarovič.
The empirical part analyzes Saša Vegri's and Svetlana Makarovič's opus. They are the main writters that connect to the theme of family and relations, but each in its own unique way. Works of other Slovenian youth literature writters are also analyzed in the chronological order of picture books editions. A representative of classical literature is Fran Levstik, representatives of contemporary literature are Oton Župančič, Kristina Brenk, Niko Grafenauer, Svetlana Makarovič, Ela Peroci, Saša Vegri, Dane Zajc, Polonca Kovač, Andrej Rozman – Roza, Bina Štampe Žmavc, Tatjana Pregl Kobe and Anja Štefan. Typical quotes from picture books are displayed, pertaining to the theme of family relations, together with other typical illustrations.
