In the present thesis, the role and duties of a Roma assistant in the first grade of primary school were researched. Since Roma assistants increasingly appear at schools and kindergartens, I decited to survey their role in the calssroom, the tasks they have in the classroom and also outside of it in the Roma settlements an whether they are and to what extent included in the calssroom work by teachers.
The thesis is divided into two parts: a theoretical and empirical one. In the theoretical part we learn about Roma, where they come from, their past and present living space and economic activities of Roma in the past. Additionally, we are encountered by the beginnnings of the education of Roma children; where, when and why the first problems of these children occur, and how to solwe the problems. Who and why is a Roma assistant needed is also described. The empirical part contains the survey which was carried out by means of questionnaires distributed among the ten assistants in the Dolenjska and Bela krajina region in May 2015. The acquired data was processed and then displayed by using graphs.
