Abstract

Title:Operational principles and reliability of active medical implants
Abstract:
Aim of this thesis is to define the performance reliability of often used medical implants. Two types of implants were chosen, namely a pacemaker and cochlear implant. Rudiments of electric stimulation are described to illuminate the problem of hazard devices, which are using different stimulation methods. Stimulation methods and technological performance of devices that are available today are listed for both types of implants. Pacemaker specifics are, in practice and in this thesis examined separately. Pacemaker as a unit and electrodes, which serve to supply heart muscle with electrical stimuli. Cochlear implant is treated as a device with its internal unit, which is intended to be implanted, and an external unit, which is used for digital processing and transmission of signals via a radiofrequency link to the internal unit. Both types of implants represent a risk to the user due to the biocompatibility and possible infections. The performance reliability, which is conditioned by technological implementation, was analysed on the basis of acquired data in accordance with method used by manufacturers of pacemakers and cochlear implants.
