Abstract

Abstract:
We have been facing the population ageing in the modern world for a while now, which is a consequence of rapid development, fertility decline and extension of expected life span. The elderly today are physically and mentally active, and the librarians could significantly help their active leisure time. In the library's planning process we must keep in mind that their information needs are different than the needs of younger adults. That is why the library services and equipment should be adapted. This is the only way for libraries to insure the active ageing of population, and by intervening of the correct information enabling the inclusion of elderly into society, instead of isolating them. The research consisted of two sections; the first section included the users of four libraries in Koroška region, and the second one included the librarians that work at those libraries. The user study included 100 persons over 65 years of age, who frequently use services of the Slovenj Gradec, Dravograd, Radlje ob Dravi and Ravne na Koroškem public libraries. The results have shown that users are generally happy with the staff and library services, but they are mostly missing the material and equipment suitable to their health conditions (larger fonts, lighter books, elevators etc.) and the "Books to go" service. The librarians are visiting the nursing homes, which is the only service offered, that is suitable for older adults. Other services are intended for adults, some also for people with special needs, but are mostly being used by the elderly. Senior-oriented services should be planned in the future, and the libraries should actively include older adults into planning process.
