Abstract

Title:Book illustration in children's picturebooks
Abstract:
Visual art is based on visual sensation. It is the art of communication through visual messages. Visual message, dealt with in this thesis is illustration, which usually works closely with the text in order to pass on an information. Through the thesis I precisely define what constitutes illustration and after historical review I focus on children's literature. Also present picture book as a special genre of children's literature, where illustration plays an important role because in conjunction with the text represents a special kind of communication between creators and readers. I Was looking historically at the very emergence of a picture book as we know it today, how attitudes to it and children's literature changed over time and why it is important for the child. I am particularly interested in the relationship of text and image and during this trying to figure out what requirements a quality picture book must meet. I also introduce my own work as the practical part of the thesis. I describe in detail the formation of picture books, from the initial idea, through sketches, to implementation. I explain how I was paying attention when using the colour and creating characters, relying on the text all the way. The pedagogical part consists of analysis, first of English and then Slovenian illustrations, in picture books intended for children. The focus is on detail and color, where I try to determine what message illustration is sending. After analyzing, the comparison was made between the English and Slovenian illustration in literature for children and with this I conclude the thesis.
