Abstract

Title:Algorithm for accurate calculation of train travel times
Abstract:
This thesis deals with the travel time of trains. The basic equations, which are used to determine the forces affecting the movement of trains at any given time are, presented. Newton's second law, which describes the movement of objects, was used to establish the differential equation of a train's movement. The procedure of dividing a track based on speed limits and changes in the infrastructure is described as well in this paper. The emphasis of this thesis is on the algorithm of establishing the travel time of a random train on a random track. The algorithm includes the processing of the train's and track's input data, the modelling of the train and the track and the solving of the equation of motion by a difference equation approach using the numerical »step-by-step« method as well. The solution of the equation is a certain train's shortest travel time possible. The algorithm to calculate travel time is implemented with the Visual Basic programming language in Excel. A few calculations of specific examples which can be interesting from a designing perspective are shown in the final part of the paper.
