One of the many key activities of every school library is promoting quality literature for both children and adolescents. This ensures it from getting lost in the clutter of inferior quality literature. Quality literature plays an important role in the development of children and young people, thus school libraries must fullfill their educational role by providing a quality library in turn for a sophisticated literary upbringing for young readers. Furthermore, a good school library should obtrusively aid its young readers indeveloping their reading habits and literary tastes. One of the methods of achieving this goal is by preparing book lists of recommended literature. The Pioneer centre for youth literature and bibliography plays a major role in the preparation of such lists. However, such lists are found to be too vast and broad for the needs of school libraries. Therefore, school libraries with the help of the Pioneer list create shorter book lists adapted to the material in their own collections, enabling the users a quick overview and possibility to actually use the literature. Guidelines, which could aid librarians in creating such lists, practically do not exist. In February 2013, research was carried out amongst randomly chosen Slovenian school libraries and primary school pupils from grades 13-15. Based on these results,useful theoretical guidelines have been developed, which will enable, in practice, Slovenian school librarians to prepare internal recommended book lists more easily and efficiently.
