Original Slovenian picturebooks started flourishing after World War II, when they began being
publishing in special book collections and formats with the characteristics of a picture book edition
(1949 the Ciciban series, 1950 the Pioneer series and 1953 the best known, šHoney Bee’ series). The
concept of original Slovene picturebooks was first encouraged by the publisher Mladinska knjiga: for
example, in 1955 there appeared Peroci and Go{nik Godec’s Moj de`nik je lahko balon, and in 1957
Muca Copatarica by the same pair. Among the most popular short prose works in a picturebook
edition are: Levstik’s canonical text Martin Krpan (1858), Mil~inski’s fairy tale Zvezdica zaspanka
(1959) and the short contemporary fairy tale by Kovi~ and Reichmann: Ma~ek Muri (1975), which is
also available as an interactive CD (2001).
