Abstract

Title:Attitude of special educators toward memory difficulties in children with special needs
Abstract:
In their line of work special educators encounter a variety of memory difficulties in children with special needs. The theoretical part of this diploma covers the topic of memory in general. Its empirical part deals with the question of: • attitudes of special educators toward memory in learning process, • difficulties that children with special needs have in this field and • habits of special educators in their practical work when memory is concerned. Research has shown that special educators find memory is of great importance in educational process. According to their observations requirements of the curriculum is at least partially inconsistent with developmental stage of memory in children. They notice children with special needs have the most visible trouble with retrieval. This is followed by retention of learning material and right after that memorizing – first learning; it is important to note that according to observations of special educators children with special needs have extended trouble with all three listed above. Results have revealed that special educators are aware of the importance of memory and that they adjust the teaching accordingly (good organization of information, pointing out the crucial information, usage of strategies that make memorizing easier). As well as implementing memory training in their work.
