Wood site productivity is part of primary productivity of a forest ecosystem and hence a good indicator of major disturbances in its functioning. At the same tirne it is also an important increment basis, which influences the beginning of regeneration of a forest stand. Determination of wood site productivity is based on the correlation between stand top height, its total wood production and site productivity. In Slovenia the determination of this indicator is still at the initial stage, as the work on site evaluation has been stopped in the last years. lf we want our policy in terms of close-to-nature forest management to be successful, this work will have to be resumed. The basic site unit, which should be represented by one value of a site index, is a systematic unit at the level of association or subassociation. This would necessitate phytocoenological mapping to be conducted in Slovene forests which have not been hytocoenologically investigated yet.
