Abstract

Title:Resistance of different types of surface treated wooden joints against ageing : B. Sc. thesis
Abstract:
Currently, wood is still an important building material for residential buildings. This is especially true for new energy saving houses. If wood is used for buildings, we must be aware of the fact that it is a material that it is easily damaged by changeable weather conditions and other outer factors, if it is not protected in the correct way. The aim of our research was to determine the influence of the joint type, direction of exposure and the way of protection on ageing of wooden joints. Therefore, we built a construction with thirteen samples and placed it outside to be exposed to weather conditions for a period of sixteen months. We divided the samples into three different types of exterior cladding (groove tongue system - horizontal, vertical and overlaid horizontal), which we then painted with the Biotan protective coating before or after set up of the construction. It was established that the best samples were those that had an overlaying joint, exposed horizontally and painted before setting up the construction. We think that this might be because the overlaid part of the board protected the board underneath, minimising the area of exposed parts at the back of the sample. Painting before the construction was also an important factor, as it protected the joints from moisture absorption.
