The article deals with the different social aspects of knowledge transfer fromthe academic research sphere to the industry. The main purpose of the contribution is to present the different forms of co-operation between university, industry and government. We are witnessing a radical shift in the co-operation between university, industry and government first of all in the most developed Western countries. In the last few decades there is increasing transformation of academic scientific knowledge as a cultural value to the keyfactor of socio-economic development. The transformation is one of the fundamental social innovations in the recent time, having a strong influence on the re-definition of classic academic scientific values, and on the new understanding of the category of intellectual property rights in the circles of academic scientists etc. The article also explains the situation in Slovenia in the context of the above-described changes. For that purpose the data from empirical investigation (the interviews among directors of the public research institutes and deans of the faculties in Slovenia) are used.
