In this thesis, we analyzed the number of functional regions of Slovenia in the period 2000 - 2010. The functional regions were defined by the commuting zone approach, that is using only data on flows of inter-municipal labour commuters in Slovenia, without the pre-defined centres of functional regions. The systems of 2-30 functional regions the macro and mezzo levels and of 50-70 functional regions at the micro level in Slovenia were modelled in the FlowMap software by the Intramax method. Compositions of functional regions, that are numbers and areas, were evaluated using the equal weighting approach for analysed factors. More suitable compositions of functional regions may form the basis for the design of development policy of regions.
