The diploma work contains a description of a black carbon generator. The instrument was developed for easier and more effective testing the Aethalometer instruments, manufactured by Aerosol d.o.o. company. The black carbon generator enables us to control the BC concentration in our test chamber. All of the instruments are now tested with the same method and with wide range of BC concentrations, independently of outdoor influences. The instrument works by combusting kerosene. A drop of kerosene is pumped on a quartz filter, and then burned with a resistance wire. While burning, we can clearly see a large amount of black smoke, which is an indicator of a black carbon.
We have implemented a fairly sophisticated safety system since the instrument presents a high risk (open flame). Four different seperate techniques were used: a NTC thermostat, controlled oxygen supply, software safety regulations and an external fire extinguisher.
Siemens LOGO! controller, with the LOGO! Soft Comfort software to control the whole system was used. The Controller has 8 different 12/24V inputs and 4 outputs with maximum of 220 V and current of 10 A.
