The following thesis aims to present wireless sensor networks and to propose a design as well as construct a practical example of one such network. The thesis addresses the matter in two parts with the theoretical part being followed by the practical part. The theoretical part describes and denes wireless network sensors, along with problems occuring while designing and building these networks. Firstly, the Zolertia Z1 module and platform, used in the practical part, are presented in theory, followed by a description of operating systems and programming of wireless sensor networks with emphasis on two of the most commonly used operating systems TinyOS and Contiki, both of which are tested and briefly compared. In the practical part of the thesis a prototype of a wireless sensor network is set up. The prototype network gathers temperature data, which is then displayed by means of a smartphone application.
