Abstract

Title:Control of a hydraulic rowing simulator
Abstract:
A rowing simulator is a device that mimics the movement and forces of on-water rowing. The thesis addresses the development of a control system for a hydraulic rowing simulator with an electrically controlled valve, which provides resistance of the hydraulic system, so that the oar forces felt by the user of the simulator match the forces felt by a rower during on-water rowing. A mathematical model of rowing is used to present information important for efficient training to the user on a computer screen. We tested the quality of the simulator's control system by performing a test with three experienced rowers. Results show a good match of measured force-curves with the data seen in the literature. The rowers graded the overall simulation quality and the quality of force control as good, but they don't believe the simulator to be a viable training tool. Based on their comments we have suggested several possibilities for further improvement of the simulator.
