Abstract

Abstract:
This article analyzes the use of Serbo-Croatisms in the Delo newspaper between 1945 and 2005 in order to establish how much the language of the media depends on the sociopolitical situation and endeavours to enhance language culture. The thesis that the language of the media is most responsible for the increased use of foreign elements is rejected on the basis of the greater number of Serbo-Croatisms during periods of more intense political pressure on Slovene and their decrease during periods when that pressure provoked reactions in the form of language culture promotion. One of the main conclusions is that the language of the media reflects the sociopolitical attitude of the time to a foreign language and its speakers, and that it is influenced by endeavours related to language culture.
