The article presents qualitative research on the professional coexistence of journalists and proofreaders in six editorial offices in Slovenia. In-depth interviews with journalists and proofreaders explored the structure of their working environment, the organization of work and communication in their editorial offices, their understanding of their own work and the work of journalists/proofreaders, and collaboration between them. The answers obtained show that the extent of communication and collaboration between proofreaders and journalists in the different stages of creating a journalistic product depends crucially on the structure of working environment and the organization of work in an editorial office. Moreover, the extent of communication and collaboration between proofreaders and journalists affects the professional self-image of proofreaders and journalists' comprehension of proofreading as such.
