The authors present and discuss the role of social support of Slovenia's residents in a period of 15 years on the basis of rural - urban comparison. The main purpose is to evaluate the difference among different age categories, focusing on elderly. Theoretical part consists of determinig the rural and urban areas and of observing the lives of eldery living in both types of settelments. Living conditions, (in)formal support systems and social networks are taken into account. On the basis of two representatitve studies the evaluation of social support networks of Slovenian residents from 1987 to 2002 is shown in the empirical part of this paper.
