Although the phenomenon of monastic calling is firmly and safely embedded in the Catholic tradition, it has not driven sociological or some other untheologic attention until recently. The article deals with the difficulties nuns face in the context of total institution. By entering the monastic institution a nun is subordinated to inevitable re-socialisation, which leads to total infantilisation. Radical denial and refusal of values of the secular world causes absolute (financial and psychic) dependence from the monastic institution. Nun has to obey her Mother Superior and the Church. Within the monastic institution, she develops abilities and honours values, which are notuseful outside the monastic environment (obedience, modesty and celibacy). Consequently, after some years of living in a monastic institution, a nun is not capable of living outside this institution. In the past, nuns were not leaving the nunnery because they did not get a formal permission. Today, although the formal option is available, they do not leave because they do notdevelop proper skills and goods claimed by the secular society. Nuns are not responsible for this negative experience.
