In January 2006, the Islamic movement Hamas won the Palestinian parliamentary elections and ended some 40 years of rule by the secular movement Fatah (the Palestine Liberation) Organisation. This significantly changed the context of resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict since Hamas does not comply with the existing judicial-political framework. The Hamas election victory was a logical outcome of the extremely negative consequences of the so-called Oslo peace process for the Palestinian nation since Fatah completely identified itself with the process. Hamas would probably be prepared to formally recognise Israel but only on the condition that the Jewish state would be willing to end its occupation of Palestinian territory.
