The thesis is based on establishing the total number of original scientific and review scientific papers published in the Les (Wood) journal from the beginning of publishing in 1949 to the end of 2005, along with establishing some basic bibliographic and content characteristics. The results served to determine the progress of the journal during this period. The articles were collected with the support of the Slovenian national bibliographic and cataloguing information service Cobib/Cobiss. The older articles were manually analysed by evaluating hard-copy journal issues. To analyse bibliometric indexes further an experimental database merging and combining the retrieved data was built. The number of articles per journal issue was growing through the years. The growth was more manifest after 1980, and especially after 1990, with the later period producing more than half of all articles. The English abstracts have become imperative, supplanting German abstracts of the earlier years. The increasing advancement of the journal can also be observed through the graphic layout. In contrast to the earlier period, the more recent articles consistently include tables and charts. In our own estimation we determined the prevailing topics or article-contents: ecology, technology, economy, wood protection, chemistry, wood in building industry, and safety at work. Authors were analysed on the basis of the numberof articles per author, co-authorship, and institution. Our manual input of earlier articles can facilitate the library updates of bibliographic data in the system Cobiss.
