Abstract

Title:Influence of light conditions on natural regeneration in the Krokar virgin forest
Abstract:
The subject of the study was natural regeneration of tree species. Data on herb layer, regeneration, stand, and topography were registered on 124 systematic sample plots, 1,.5 m x 1,5 m each, and direct and diffuse light wasmeasured. The average diffuse and direct light values amounted to 4,7 % and3,8 %, respectively. The measured values were similar to the ones gathered in analyses of virgin forests in Slovenia and abroad. The regeneration density, germs excluded, amounted to 29000 ha-1, with beech (57 %) and sycamore (41 %) prevailing. With the increase of height of regeneration, the proportion of beech increases, while the proportion of sycamore decreases. Light intensity positively influence the regeneration density and regenerationcoverage; however, the correlations are mainly insignificant. The coverage by ground vegetation, with Allium sp. prevailing, is higher when compared to other virgin forests in Slovenia. The analysis showed that, apart from light conditions, herb layer is an important if not the main limitation factor for natural regeneration.
