This thesis examines the potential of creating illustrated maps to visually represent local histories, issues, and stories. It explores the intersection of illustration and cartography, along with the methods, concepts, software and tools which facilitate collaboration between these disciplines. By integrating skills from these fields, the study demonstrates the capacity of illustrated maps to merge narratives and visually engage viewers. The methodology includes visual research, data collection, and interpretation through collages of photographs, drawings, animated drawings, cutouts, and text. The practical section introduces an interactive work titled “Scattered Rijeka: An interactive map of Rijeka Crnojevica,”allowing viewers to engage with the content by clicking, zooming, and sliding through the interface. The study highlights the potential of illustrated maps to synthesize narratives and engage audiences visually, making them a helpful tool for representing diverse perspectives. Through this interdisciplinary approach, illustrated maps have the potential to become a valuable medium for storytelling and visual communication.
