Introduction: Despite certain changes in society, people with special needs are still not accepted without reservations. The environment that surrounds everything around us is the main factor influencing the integration of individuals into society. It has a particularly large impact on the quality of life of children with special needs, as environmental factors can serve as an obstacle, support or both in their integration. The environment is divided into several areas, the most famous of which are the physical and social environment. In addition to these two, the occupational environment described by the occupational therapy model MOHO is also important. Purpose: We wanted to show the example of a child with special needs and the various environmental factors that affect him. We wanted to learn more about the effects of the environment on a child's development, his daily activities, behavior, emotions and participation in society. Methods: We conducted a qualitative singular case study of a child with a severe intellectual disability. We collected data through semi-structured interviews with three people who spend the most time with the child. The data were then processed with a qualitative content analysis. Results: Child is most often exposed to social and physical factors, as well as factors of the wider environment or legislation, which affect his functioning, behavior and emotions. The social environment, such as family and school employees, provides the greatest support for him, followed by positive characteristics and reaction of the social environment and participation in external incentives. On the other hand, the child is hindered by the physical environment, legislation, negative characteristics and reaction of the social environment. In order for him to be able to integrate into the environment and activities, a number of adjustments have been made to make his participation easier. All the above-mentioned factors, various stimuli from the environment and the child’s involvement in activities affect him negatively and positively, and his behavioral response is also related to this. Discussion and conclusion: Environmental factors are so important in integrating a child with special needs in society and developing their independence. It is important for daily activities and independent living. The environment affects each child differently, so it must be adapted according to their needs and so the environment represents a large area of work for an occupational therapist.
